‘Flashmob’ planned to support street fundraisers

02/07/10

Online activist collective Conspiracy for Good is planning its third ‘flashmob’ in support of street F2F in the week commencing 19 July.

The collective ran a trial ‘Hug-a-Chugger’ flashmob with a handful of friends in May in Central London. This was followed with the first low-key ‘official’ event in June. Now Conspiracy for Good hopes to run a bigger event – also to be staged in London – with a large number of people participating later this month.

The flashmob will see members of the public  – wearing T-shirts bearing slogans such as ‘Hug A Chugger’, ‘I’m With Good’, and ‘Don’t say sorry to the chugger, say yes’ – acting as fundraisers’ buddies as they try to facilitate introductions to passersby.

Oscar Carlson, project co-ordinator at Conspiracy for Good, says: “We’ve based this on the ‘hug a hoodie’ thing, which was an attempt to reclaim a disparaging word. We’re trying to do the same for ‘chuggers’.

“With such simple messages printed on T-shirts, we will give fundraisers a hand by breaking the ice between the public to show the good that chuggers can do using creative ideas and messages.”

Although the PFRA has not been involved in any way with the planning of the first two events, Conspiracy for Good has asked to co-ordinate the July flashmob with the PFRA’s site allocation function.

The organisation is actively looking for volunteers to take part in the flashmob. Anyone who’s interest can join in through the Conspiracy for Good website.

PFRA, or course, is extremely grateful to anyone who wants to publicly show their support for street fundraisers. After all, this kind of thing doesn’t happen every day of the week.

The concept behind Conspiracy for Good is to foster a “new way of storytelling while working with good causes and charities”.
