The British Red Cross’s chief executive Sir Nick Young (pictured) tried his hand at street fundraising earlier this month. He was joined by the charity’s director of fundraising, Mark Astarita in a public show of support for their F2F fundraisers.
Sir Nick says of his experience, on a Red Cross blog: “It was fantastic but really hard work. You are essentially performing all the time – trying to make people smile, finding witty remarks. I am in awe of the fundraisers’ energy and enthusiasm.
“It’s a difficult job and they do it with grace, style and panache. They deserve our utmost thanks.”
Unfortunately, neither was successful in finding new donors during their two-and-a-half hour stint on Finbsury Pavement in London, each recording what in fundraiser parlance is known as a ‘doughnut’.
Every year Red Cross fundraising staff, including the director of fundraising, leave their offices for a couple of shifts taking part in bucket cash collections around London during Red Cross Week. But this is the first time senior staff have tried their hand at Direct Debit F2F fundraising.
